surfing

Keep going and never give up

My wife Sarah and I, like to do active sports. We live in the Midlands of the UK, and for the last 20 years we spend our holidays on the coast in The South West of the England. The area is a well known surfing area too and it has an active well established surfing culture. When we first spent time here, we loved to watch the surfers gracefully riding the big waves. We dreamed of being able to surf our selves. But we live over 200 miles from any coastline.. We wondered to ourselves: is this an impossible dream; could we ever learn to do this; is it too hard, are we too old and could we invest the time it would take?

Starting small, we initially took up body boarding as a first step. We bought wetsuits and all the gear. That was over 15 years ago now. Although this was great fun, our dreams were to stand up on a board and surf properly. Around 10 years ago we took the plunge and bought surf boards.

It took us a huge amount of effort to learn, because we live so far from the sea, and at that time we could only take the boards out during holiday times. Practice, practice and even more practice was what was required. We kept going and never gave up.

It took us a 2 years or so of dedication and slog, just to learn how to stand up, let alone anything else. You may be wondering: “Was it all worth it?” Well, anyone that has persevered with learning to surf will testify… there is nothing actually like it! The freedom of riding a wave is something quite special and spiritual. It releases the soul and is something that is very inspiring, motivating and even addictive too. You feel in flow with the sea, the waves and world around you. there is nothing quite like doing what you love doing, and you just want to do it all a time!

After a few more years have passed by, we are now both at an intermediate level. Our eldest girls enjoy surfing too, and we all enjoy the thrill and feeling of flow we get from surfing those waves whenever we can.

So what does this mean to you? Well, in whatever it is that you want to do, and whatever inspires you, keep going and never give up. There is nothing like being in the flow of being able to what you enjoy!
